Communist Party of Kurdistan—Iraq on Israel/Palestine

Joined a fabulous conversation with a Communist Party of Kurdistan—Iraq representative, discussing both the political situation in Iraq and the Hamas-Israel war. The recent resolution by his party clearly condemns the Hamas massacre and recalls that attacks directed against the civilian population on both the Israeli and the Gaza side have to be denounced. Educated by their own painful experiences in Iraq they consider the horrific events to be a confirmation for their conviction that a government focussing on nothing but security will not even be able to fulfill this promise, while armed groups whose primordial objective has become violence in itself, fueled by external actors’ (especially Iran’s) proxy activities, only cause more suffering and prevent Palestinian self-determination. In fact these kinds of armed groups and governments focussing on nothing but security need each other and fuel each other with catastrophic consequences. His party ultimately calls for a peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by a two-State solution. Concerning the recent attacks of Iran backed Shia militias on US facilities and their anti-Israeli protests at the Jordanian border our Kurdish friend was confident that these activities will stay contained. The reasonable, considerate position of the Communist Party of Kurdistan—Iraq positively stands out in the utter moral bankruptcy of many international (Western and non-Western) leftist organisations who support a fight effectively lead by Hamas, who provide excuses for Hamas atrocities or even welcome the success of Hamas, but it also more sensitive than many statements by those who imagine themselves to be an effective part of the fight against Hamas by merely waving the Israeli flag. If I woud be a citizen of Iraqi Kurdistan, I would probably vote for them!

I also recommend to read the report by Thomas Osten Sacken from Iraqi Kurdistan concerning the attitude of the local population concerning the current war between Hamas and Israel and possible misunderstandings in international communication.
